The island of Madeira ( Madeira the Portuguese word for wood ), is part of Portugal and is therefore a member of the EU. Madeira is situated 951 km southwest of Lisbon and 750 km west of the coast of Morocco in the Atlantic Ocean. Several other islands are part of the  archipelago of Madeira , Porto Santo (2 hour ride on the car ferry), the protected area of the archipelago "Desertas" (day trips possible) and also uninhabited "Selvagens Islands, famous for the abundance of fish and shrimp. Madeira has about 235 000 inhabitants in an area of 741 square kilometers, the main part of Madeirans live in the somewhat hectic capital city of Funchal and the surrounding area. The rest of the population (25%) live in rural main part of the island which the typical southern euroean charme and easy going lifestyle. Thanks to EU support. Madeira has a "Central European" infrastructure of highways, expressways, water Supplies, telephone and internet ect. The food supply of fish, meat and vegetables are of good quality and for the most part directly from the island, the prices about 25% cheaper than in continental europe. Madeira as a holiday destination offers a stunning landscape of rugged mountains, green valleys and numerous rivers "Ribeiras"and more than 1000 km along the Levada trails, which serve as an irrigation system for the slightly drier south-east of the island. Swimming lagoons with sand beaches were built along the steep coast. (Calheta Beach, Ponto da Sol Ribeira Brava). The climate in Madeira is temperate in summer rarely warmer than 28 ° C, in winter on the coast not below 18 ° C. The water temperature is 18 degrees in winter and 24 ° C in summer.
